The Floresta da Tijuca (Tijuca's Rainforest) is the best place to do some hiking, the trails are countless and take us to very different places, there are short trails, long trails, easy trails, difficult trails ... ultimately, there is plenty for all tastes, but one thing is pretty constant: the beauty of the destinations, Cocanha, Bico do Papagaio (Parrot's Bill), Pico da Tijuca (Tijuca's Peak), Lagoa das Fadas (Fairies' Lake), Caverna dos Morcegos (Bats' Cave), Cachoeira do Taunay (Taunay´s Waterfall), etc ... Must to see !!
As you can see there are lots of wild animals around, i mean, after all, this is a national park (hence the name: Parque Nacional da Floresta da Tijuca), a preservation area ... here you will find typical Mata Atlântica (rainforest) fauna like: quatis, snakes, cutias, spiders, lizards, bats, etc ...

In any case after we passed the Taunay Waterfall and the Fairies´ Lake we step on the very heart of the rainforest ... and if we keep climbing up eventually we are going to get to the hightest peaks in Rio de Janeiro |

Alongside the trail, if you keep your atention focused you will see that there are many trees that took very weird forms as if they had been sculpted ... magna opera naturae ... |

and the flora ?? among the green you can find some beauties that only reveal themselves after a close inspection ... feeling hungry ?? as we, boyscouts say: everything can be eaten ... some of them only once ... hehehe ... but hey, the one in the middle is called jaca and is really, really good ... won´t kill you though ... hehehe

You did it !! You are at the highest spot in Rio de Janeiro, 1027 meters to be exact ... from here you have a 360º view of the city, you can spot Pedra da Gávea, Pedra Bonita, Christ the Redeemer, Sugar Loaf, Taquara, Tijuca, Agulhinha da Gávea, etc ...

you know what Newton said right ?? everything that goes up eventually has to get down, and trust me, it gets really cold at night ... so, on the way down i will take you through the Caves Sections, there are some marvelous rocks there, some of them stand on very unusual ways and are home for hundreds of bats ... we better hurry up before they awake !! |

Finally we arrive at the exit of the Park and just before we go out we visit our final spot: Açude da Solidão (Loneliness Lake) ... this is an abnormally quiet place to stay, eerie would be the proper feeling ... there was one time i was with a friend here at night (around 7 p.m.) and she asked for a picture (whith a webcam) while she was sitting on a rock in front of the Açude ... no problem i said even though i had a very disturbing feeling that something was not o.k., nevertheless i took the picture and when i got home i saw a very strange pattern on the already very dark picture so i applied a Photoshop filter ... judge for yourself ... (this is a true story)
